GRANDS AND GREAT GRANDS

June 8, 2022 | Family Stories

These days it's hard t know if grand children or great grand children really appreciate what they have when they can learn and spend time with grandparents. You know, the youngins. As you know, if you read my previous blog post, I grew up with mine and they were like Mom and Dad. (They are in the picture on the right). They loved their grandson Sterling and were at almost everything the kid had in the pre-k/school aged years. Sterling was so close to them as well, many of his teachers were in awe when his GREAT grandparents would show up with him somewhere. The bottom photo is of Sterling and my dad. Unfortunately, neither of us knew him well until he was older and moved to Texas with us. Paw Paw Jim was always proud of Sterling and asking where he was, why didn't he come over more. He was in his early 20's...need I say more. :) Sterling has said many times how grateful he is that he had the time that he did with Paw Paw Jim and so am I. The photo on the left is of Sterling with his aunts. He sure loved the little short one in red - and loved to pick on her all of the time when he was taller at age 10! lol Sterling and I were lucky to have grand parents and great grandparents to grow up with and have forever memories of the wonderful times we shared. Many people don't have children, or grand children to be with them and help them through their senior years. Or, like me, the kids move out of state. We know many of the difficulties seniors have navigating the system and how stressful change can be. Maybe you could think of me as a "Rent A Daughter" to help guide you and assist you in your senior years, helping to ease the stress so you and your family can each enjoy your lives knowing that Mom and Dad are taken care of.

WHEN I WAS A KID

May 25, 2022 | Family Stories

Hey there. This is the first time I have written a blog post, so bear with me. All of my life I have loved seniors. When I was a kid we just said old people, and depending on my age it could have been anywhere from 30 to 100! You probably can relate. During my school aged years I spent all summers and school breaks with my grandparents, and we made lots of great memories. For many years they didn't have central heat or air conditioning. To keep cool we had one window fan in the living room and in Georgia the summers were sweltering hot but we always made the best of it. Early mornings were for picking all of the veggies from the garden. Mostly Granny and Pawpaw did that while I slept in however, when I heard the screen door close I knew Pop would start talking REALLY LOUD and I'd roll on out of bed. I'd find them all hot and sweaty drinking a glass of ice cold sweet tea or water. Once they cooled off - and I ate breakfast, Pop was off again to do whatever it was he was going to do that day. About 11:30 the menfolk would come in for lunch. Menfolk were my uncle, dad and pop & anyone else they may have been working with that day. Granny would make sandwiches with chips and home made canned pickles and we would all gather at the table and eat. I remember Granny was always last to sit down to eat and last to get up from the table because while she was eating she would take breaks to fill up everyone's tea glass. Once we got all cleaned up and the men were gone again, we would turn on Price Is Right and start stringing and breaking beans or shelling any variety of peas. We would work most of the day on our task while watching the soaps. Lordy, I learned a whole lot from those soaps!

Benefits of Downsizing During Retirement

Downsizing can offer several benefits for seniors in retirement, including financial, lifestyle, and health-related advantages. Here are some of the key benefits: Financial Freedom: a. Reduced Housing Costs: Downsizing often involves moving to a smaller home, which can result in lower monthly mortgage payments, property taxes, and utility bills. b. Cash Release: Selling a larger home can free up a substantial amount of equity that seniors can use for retirement income, investments, or to pay off debts. c. Lower Maintenance Expenses: Smaller homes typically require less maintenance and repairs, leading to cost savings. Simplified Living: a. Reduced Clutter: Downsizing forces seniors to declutter and get rid of possessions they no longer need, leading to a simpler and less stressful living environment. b. Easier Mobility: Smaller homes are generally more accessible, making it easier for seniors to move around and reducing the risk of accidents. c. Lower Cleaning and Maintenance: Smaller living spaces are easier to clean and maintain, saving time and effort. Enhanced Quality of Life: a. Close-Knit Communities: Many senior-friendly housing options, like retirement communities, offer social activities and opportunities to build strong friendships with peers. b. Access to Amenities: Downsizing to a senior community often provides easy access to amenities like fitness centers, swimming pools, and dining options. c. Reduced Stress: Smaller homes and communities can lead to a reduced level of stress and an overall improved quality of life. Health Benefits: a. Reduced Stress: Smaller living spaces can lead to less stress, which can have a positive impact on seniors' mental and physical health. b. Simplified Daily Routine: A smaller, more manageable living space can make daily tasks and routines easier, reducing physical strain. Safety and Security: a. Senior-Friendly Features: Many downsized homes or communities are designed with seniors' safety in mind, incorporating features like handrails, step-free entrances, and emergency call systems. b. Peace of Mind: Living in a community or smaller home can provide a sense of security and peace of mind, knowing that help is often readily available if needed. Environmental Benefits: a. Reduced Carbon Footprint: Smaller homes typically have a lower environmental impact, as they require less energy to heat and cool, reducing utility bills and contributing to a greener lifestyle. Location Flexibility: a. Proximity to Services: Downsizing can enable seniors to live closer to healthcare facilities, shopping centers, and other essential services. b. Travel Opportunities: With fewer responsibilities and a smaller living space, seniors may have more time and resources to travel and explore new destinations. It's important for seniors to carefully consider their individual needs and preferences when deciding to downsize. Downsizing can offer numerous advantages, but it's essential to plan the transition thoughtfully to ensure it aligns with one's retirement goals and lifestyle.
